Located in the centre of the 155 km coastline is the town of Albufiera. The town was once a major seaport important to trading in the region. There are only a little more than 12,000 year-round residents, but they are visiting annually by tens of thousands of vacationers in search of the perfect beach location. Albufiera once took a couple of hard hits in 1532 and 1755 when an earthquake struck the region. There have also been wars that had taken their toll on the city, leaving it poverty stricken for decades. City of Faro
Located east of Albureira, Faro is home to the local government of Algarve. It has a population of more than 58,000 and a history that includes both Arabic and Roman ruins. These are a few that remained following the two major earthquakes. The rest of Faro was mostly reconstructed following 1755, making it relatively new by European standards.
Today, Faro is still surrounded in the older section by the Roman walls. There is also a major nature reservation with numerous varieties of birds that make this their stopping point during migration. The beach is a short 7 Kms from the city.
