In Madeira, beach activities
are plentiful. Madeira is an island archipelago located over 600 miles
west of mainland Portugal. In addition to the main island of Madeira,
the region includes Porto Santo, and the Desertas and Selvangens island
groups that are uninhabited and provide sanctuary for numerous bird
species.
Warm and clean waters of the Madeira beaches
The region’s climate is subtropical with temperatures ranging
between 16°C and 25°C (61°F and 76°F). Thanks
to warm Gulf stream currents, the water also stays warm year-round,
and the remote location and relatively small population keep
the surrounding ocean free from pollution, making this area
one of the best places for water activities and beaches in
Portugal.
Madeira beaches and the pleasant waters of the Atlantic are perfect
for sunbathing, swimming, jet skiing, windsurfing and a host of other
water sports and activities. The beaches of Paul do Mar and Jardim
are particularly popular with surfers.
Relax at some of the finest beaches in Portugal at the island of
Porto Santo
One of the top spots for beaches in the Madeira region is the island
of Porto Santo. Located within sight of Madeira island, Porto Santo
has over five miles of uninterrupted beachfront and clear waters
filled with sea life. Diving and snorkelling are popular activities,
and many are drawn to the underwater attraction created by the sunken
ship, Madeirense, located south of the harbour.
Porto Santo is also known for the healing properties of its beach.
The sands contain carbonated material that is reported to have a
healing, therapeutic application, adding another interesting facet
to Madeira beaches. To harness this healing potential, a thalassotherapy
health clinic was started on the island and orients using products
inspired by sand and sea.
There are many beautiful and inviting beaches in Portugal and Madeira
beaches are some of the best. An international airport on Madeira
makes getting there easy, and several cruise lines offers the region
as a destination.
