Portugal History Facts
Portugal history is a fascinating study in just how the world views geography and religion and their role in the lifestyle of a people and nation. In the history of Portugal there have been rises and falls of great empires, but the national disasters like the 1755 lisbon earthquake , that hit throughout the ages have also greatly shaped Portugal history.
History of Madeira
A study of Portuguese history should also include the history of Madeira, an island off the Portugal coast. The island was discovered in 1418 by Joao Goncalves Zarco. It was here that early settlers bringing grapevines discovered that the land was perfect for growing grapes. That fact, along with the fact that Madeira was also a colony for slaves, spelled out wine production. Madeira wine is still some of the world’s most popular wine.
Azores History
The Azores, a chain of islands a little farther into the Atlantic than Madeira, also played an integral part in the trade of slaves, wine and other goods going to the new America. Weather, including the hurricane history of the Azores, factored in as well.
The founder of the Azores is considered by Portugal natives to be Prince Infante Dom Henrique or Henry the Navigator. He was able to navigate trade routes and create a map of the world that lay to the west that was exciting to the Portuguese people. Henry’s discovery of the Azores in 1432 came just after his colonization of Madeira.
The hurricane history of the Azores includes the great hurricane of 1857 which in just a few minutes destroyed years of industry and agriculture on the islands. The worst time for hurricanes is September and October, as most guide books for travellers will reveal. A map of the Azores, shows their vulnerability to currents and winds.
Places of Interest
Since Portugal history is so full of different cultures having occupied the countryside, there are many places of interest that still reflect the Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish occupational periods in Portugal. Facts about each period of history and a timeline can be found in the museums and architecture alike. For many travellers a sampling of regional wines is the perfect way to take in all of the Portugal history.
