A look at a Lisbon
map shows a large city with a maze of streets and numerous loops,
parkways, switchback streets, and other road features that can be
tricky to navigate. Although it is somewhat challenging to maneuver
through any large city, a Lisbon map or Portugal
street map will
make traveling much easier.
Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal. It has a population of 681,063
within the city proper and at total of 2,000,000 residents, including
those in the surrounding metropolitan areas. The city itself covers
87 square miles.
Lisbon has an
ancient heritage stretching back many centuries. In 1755, two thirds
of the city was destroyed in the massive earthquake that struck
the area. The old Moorish quarter, also known as the Alfama, is
one area that survived the earthquake. It is on the eastern area
of the city and is home to the Se, a large, historic cathedral.
In the Baixa, or Lower Town area, one can see the efforts of organized
rebuilding that occurred after the earthquake. This is one of the
few areas of the city where the streets are laid out in straight,
easily navigable patterns.
A good Lisbon
map will include the locations of Castelo de São
Jorge, which sits on a hill overlooking the Alfama, and other important
attractions such as Jerónimos Monastery and the Museu de
História Natural (Museum of Natural History). It should
also differentiate between small side streets and the busy thoroughfares.
Distances and other legend information is important as well, but
be warned that Lisbon contains many hills that make locations further
apart than they appear, even on an accurate map.
There are several Internet sites that offer Lisbon maps, but they
are not always detailed enough to show the street names, one-way
streets and other important information. While some car rental companies
and other businesses in the city may offer an airport Lisbon map,
it is best to purchase a detailed map that you can carry with you
whether on foot or in a vehicle.
Lonely Planet offers an in-depth travel atlas of Portugal, and maps.com
has many items to choose from when looking for an accurate, detailed
Lisbon map.
